As many of you may know, I’m a fashion design student and even as a student, it’s a full time job; a lifestyle…
With each semester we have a theme (Streetwear for this one) and outsiders… Here’s how it went for me:
First of all I started with a character Béranger from the play by Eugène Ionesco “Exit the King” or in french, Le Roi Se Meurt. This character is especially scared of dying when he finds out that he doesn’t have too much time to live.
The king reminded me a lot of my late grandmother, Georgette, to whom I dedicated this collection.
In many representations of the play, the king is shown to be wearing pyjamas; a state in which we don’t generally see royalty in and that is what fascinated me most. I did some research on sleepwear and what kings would wear throughout history…
In progress I decided that for this semester I wanted and needed to experiment, to better learn and learn new things. So I started with fabric choices, like velvet which I will say is hard and tricky. I’ve definitely made some mistakes but that’s how we learn and I learned a lot about it.
Then by making things personal, I’ve made a huge step to make people step into my world. There is always fear of criticism around especially in my field and you can definitely not satisfy everyone and that’s okay. It is always a bit scary to share a piece of yourself and wait for a response.
In the end, I’d like to thank everyone who participated in making this project a success… Friends, family, teacher and you teta. I know you’d be proud.
